Furman advises many of the world's leading academic medical institutions, integrated health delivery systems, nonprofits, and biopharmaceutical companies on leadership strategy and needs. Mark specializes in counseling physicians, scientists, and clinicians on their leadership journeys to improve the healthcare industry. He is an academic cardiologist who brings more than 25 years of experience in clinical care, hospital leadership, research, and education to his role as a leadership advisor and a search professional.

Medical and academic leadership

  • Before Spencer Stuart, Mark was on faculty at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Mark also served as chief of cardiovascular medicine at South Shore Hospital, a clinical affiliate of the Brigham and Women's Hospital.
  • Previously, he directed interventional cardiology at UMass Memorial Health Care and was a professor of medicine and cell biology at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine.
  • Mark is an internationally known expert in platelet physiology and thrombosis and has published many articles in major journals, including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Circulation, The Journal of Experimental Medicine and Journal of American College of Cardiology. He has presented at major international scientific meetings, and he is included in the Castle Connolly and the U.S. News and World Report Top Doctor lists.
  • Mark received the Lou Rieger Quality Award, the firm’s annual award for the highest quality client service.

Mark trained in cardiovascular medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, and he was named a John A. Hartford Scholar at Harvard Medical School. Mark received all his education at Emory University, graduating with his M.D. (summa cum laude), M.B.A, and B.A. (magna cum laude) in mathematics. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Physician Executives.
